Hosted by Willowbank Raceway last Saturday, the 2019 “New Years 400 Thunder” was jammed packed with action and featured plenty of TUFF Touring Cars competing in Pro Radial, Top Sportsman and Super Street!
One of the real head-turners at the event was Simon Ball’s “Electric Blue” 1971 Ford Falcon XY that was competing in the Super Streets. For those who don’t follow Drag Racing, the Super Street Race Bracket is an entry level sedan category, using the “dial your own” handicap system. This bracket is for sedans nominating to run between 10.00 and 12.999 seconds.
In between races, we caught up with owner and driver of this road registered Drag Car Simon Ball to discuss the history and performance of his machine.
“The car started its life as a 1971 Ford XY Falcon 500 that I bought off my Grandmother around 30 years ago. My Grandmother actually bought the car brand new when she retired so it was great to have it stay in the family. Once I bought the car it was promptly stripped down where I spent the next 4 years doing a full restoration.”
“It was a country NSW car so it had a good straight body with all its original panels, original glass and overall was in great condition. The idea was to turn the car into a Ford Falcon XY GT replica, so it was given a full new interior and a new “Electric Blue” paint job which was a standard GT colour.”
“After its restoration, it then spent the next couple of years competing as a show car where it was named in the “Top 100 Street Machines” at both Summernats 9 & 10. After that we really didn’t do to much with the car, we kept it registered but with all of life’s commitments it sat in the garage for quiet some time.” said Simon

Fast forward a couple of years this 1971 Ford XY Falcon has had an engine upgrade and is now a road registered street car running a 10 second 1/4 mile. Check out the video of this XY Falcon launching down the 1/4 mile at Willowbank Raceway as well as complete list of information on the cars build and performance.
